It may seem difficult, or even impossible: in reality, putting in contact lenses is something that, once learned, becomes quick and easy. At the beginning all you need is a little practice and, above all, patience. Here is a step-by-step guide…
Putting the lens in
First of all, wash your hands thoroughly and dry them. Always start with the right eye: getting used to this order – right first, then left – means you will never mix the lenses up.
Make sure the lens is not inside out. Place it on your fingertip: if the edges flare outwards it is inside out; if it forms a regular half-sphere it is the right way round.
Looking straight into a mirror, use your other hand to lift the upper eyelid so the eye does not close, and at the same time gently pull down the lower eyelid with a finger of the hand holding the lens. Do everything very gently.
Bring the lens towards the eye and, with a slow movement, place it gently on the lower part of the eye. Slowly close your eyelids for a moment: the lens will settle into place. Repeat the same steps for the left eye.
Taking the lens out
It helps to use one or two lubricating, moisturising drops per eye, so the lens is moist and easier to remove.
Pull down the lower eyelid with the middle finger of your right hand. With the index finger of your left hand, lift the upper eyelid. Then slide the lens onto the white of the eye with your free index finger and gently pinch it between index finger and thumb. Repeat for the other eye.
If the edges of the lens stick together, put a few drops of saline or multi-purpose solution on it and rub gently until they come apart.
Throw daily disposable lenses away. If it is a fortnightly lens, put it back in its case filled with solution.
Cleaning and storing your lenses
Before touching your eyes, your lenses or the lens case, always wash your hands with soap and dry them with a lint-free towel. Fill both compartments of the lens case with disinfecting solution. Remove the lenses one at a time and place them in the clean, dry palm of your hand.
Clean each lens with a few drops of daily cleaning solution, gently rubbing both sides with your fingertip. Then rinse them well with solution and put them in the case.
Fill both compartments with contact lens solution, close the lid and leave the lenses completely immersed.
